About Mangalore now known as Mangaluru

Mangaluru is not just a hometown!!!! It’s a feeling, it’s an emotion. As of 2017, Mangaluru has a 6,80,740 population. It is the only city in the world that has nine names. Mangaluru is called Mangalore in English, Mangaluru in Kannada, Kudla in Tulu, Kodial in Konkani, Maikala in Beary, Mangalapuram in Malayalam, Manjuran in Sanskrit, Kaudal in Urdu, and Manjiloree in Arabic. Mangaluru is one of the most cosmopolitan non-metro cities of India.

Mangaluru was named after the deity Mangaladevi. According to local legend, a princess from Malabar named Premaladevi renounced her kingdom and became a disciple of Matsyendranath. Having converted Premaladevi to the Nath sect, Matsyendranath renamed her Mangaladevi. After her death, the Mangaladevi temple was consecrated in her honour by the local people. Thus the city got its name from the temple.

The Mangaluru Dasara (Tulu: Marnemi), is a festival in the Indian city of Mangalurue organized by Kudroli Shri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple.[1] It is also referred to as the Navarathri Festival, Vijayadashami. The tiger dance, lion dance and bear dance are the main attractions. The city is decorated with lights for the 10 days of the occasion. K.S. Rao Road during Dasara Gangavatharana, Kudroli People decorate their houses and businesses, shops, hotels, etc. Most of the roads in Mangaluru such as M.G Road, K.S Rao Road, GHS Road are decorated for the procession. The image of Mangaluru City Corporation building decorated with colourful and bright lights makes for spectacular viewing.

The celebration was the centre of attraction during the Navrathri festival. Navrathri and Shivarathri are the two big festivals celebrated at Gokarnanatheshwara Temple.

Royal Tiger dance (Tulu: Pilivesa, Kannada: Hulivesha) is a folk dance performed during Dasara. Typically young males form troops of five to ten. They are costumed like tigers and use a band with two or three drummers. They roam around the streets and houses. The tiger dance is performed to honour the goddess Sharada, whose favoured animal is the tiger.

During Navaratri, various idols along with Sharada Devi will be installed by the priests at Swarna Kalamantapa amidst the chanting of hymns and performance of Vedic rituals. In these nine days of celebrations, the decorated idols of Sharada Devi along with Mahaganapati and Nava Durga will be worshipped.

Mangaluru’s St. Aloysius College Chapel is said to be one of the most beautiful in the country. The walls and ceiling are covered with frescoes painted by an Italian Jesuit priest in the 19th century. Kambala, held from December to February is a unique festival in Mangaluru. When the paddy fields are full of water, the Buffaloes are brought sleek and shining for this very important event in the year’s calendar. Water and mud spraying all over, the buffaloes charge off towards the finish line… Panambur Port is India’s ninth-largest cargo-handling port. The Sultan Battery in Mangaluru was built in 1784 by Tipu Sultan to defend the city from enemy warships entering the Gurupura river. There are many dance forms and folks are still practised in the city. Traditional dances like ‘Yakshanga’, ‘Pilivesha’ and many other dances are performed during the festivals like Dussehra and Janmashtami.

The Government of India has planned to make Mangaluru a startup district with 20 tinkering labs and incubation centres. The startups aim at providing solutions in agriculture, health, education and information technology. The first startup incubation centre in Dakshina Kannada district is will be established at Mallikatta in Mangaluru. The government of Karnataka has planned to make Mangaluru an Animation hub for the State.
